Das Kompetenzzentrum Nachhaltige Energietechnik (zafh.net) widmet sich der Energieforschung. Das zafh.net setzt seinen Schwerpunkt auf die Entwicklung von integrierten und systemischen Energiekonzepten für Gebäude, Stadtquartiere und Regionen.

Die Relevanz der Forschung zeigt sich im jährlichen Energiebedarf Europas: Knapp die Hälfte der Primärenergie – rund 20 Millionen Gigawattstunden – entfällt auf den Gebäudesektor. Eine zunehmend vernetzte Stadt nutzt dabei Ressourcen effizient, setzt intelligente Mobilitätskonzepte um und sorgt dafür, dass ihre Infrastruktur in hohen Anteilen durch erneuerbare Energie versorgt wird.

Das zafh.net wurde 2002 unter Leitung von Prof. Dr. Ursula Eicker als landesweiter Exzellenzcluster im Themenfeld Gebäudeenergieforschung unter dem Namen „Zentrum für angewandte Forschung an Fachhochschulen – Nachhaltige Energietechnik“ (zafh.net) vom baden-württembergischen Wissenschaftsministerium mit Unterstützung der Landesstiftung Baden-Württemberg etabliert. Heute arbeitet das zafh.net mit Industriepartnern, Kommunen, Architekten und Planungsbüros zusammen. Weiterhin besteht eine Zusammenarbeit mit Wohnbaugesellschaften, Hochschulen und Forschungsinstituten weltweit im Bereich innovative Energiekonzepte für Städte und Regionen, Energiemanagementlösungen für Gebäude und Kommunen, Komponenten für solares Heizen und Kühlen sowie Simulation und Steuerung von energietechnischen Anlagen. Die Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter kommen aus verschiedensten Fachrichtungen wie zum Beispiel  Bauphysik, Infrastrukturmanagement, Architektur und Stadtplanung, Geoinformatik, Maschinenbau und Versorgungstechnik und sorgen somit für einen interdisziplinären Charakter der Forschungsgruppen.

Die Sprecher des Kompetenzzentrums sind Dr. Dirk Pietruschka und Prof. Dr. Bastian Schröter (Vertreter). Die Geschäftsführung liegt bei Maximilian Haag.
